Thank you for this, and for reading my essays all year. It's meant a lot to me to sense a connection with friends through these essays. And now 2026 is here - Happy New Year to you and yours!

I enjoyed Hospicing and Sand Talk and look forward to reading Against.

Your sensing of the shifting seasons reminds me of a crazy stat from Mark Lynas’ “Our Final Warning”: the climate of northerly locations is doing the equivalent of moving southwards 20km a year. 800km in forty years. No wonder snow is a distant memory for many people.

Moving south at 20km per year.....wow. But seems right. And the warnings keep coming too, faster and faster. I'll check out the Mark Lynas book - thanks for the stat and the book mention.

Yeah. I just looked up the Note I wrote after I read it:

Fun stat from Our Final Warning: a 2C temperature rise by 2050 is the equivalent of northern hemisphere mid-latitude cites moving southwards at a rate of 20km yearly, 54m daily, 2.5m hourly, or half a millimeter a second.

Madrid will be like Marrakesh

Seattle = San Fransisco

Reykavik = Edinburg

London = Barcalona

Stockholm = Budapest

Of course, it’s the subtropic climate moving northwards.

And it won’t stop at 2C…
